Service Idea: Encouraging Other Mamas

We’ve all been there…

You’re just about to finish up shopping when you realize that your little one has created quite a mess. You rush to the nearest bathroom only to realize that you forgot to refill the travel wipe container in the diaper bag…

Or does that only happen to me?

Every single time?

I’m past the diaper changing station in life, which makes me sad at times, but those messy times would either make me feel like such a “loser” of a mom or make me laugh until I peed my own pants… (kidding… maybe…)

As I am beginning to think of ways that I can serve and love others this year, I just keep thinking of those mamas who are having a tough moment or even a really tough day. I want to be an encourager for those mamas who feel like they are failing, because if we’re all honest here, we are all one of them, at one moment or another.  I want to remind other mamas that Jesus loves them deeply, sees them, and that they are not alone in this motherhood journey.

This is a pretty simple way to encourage and remind a mama who may be having a hard moment:

  1. Grab some travel wipe size packets from the store.
  2. Tie a little encouraging note around it and pray for that mama (or mamas) that will find this little treasure.
  3. And leave it on the changing table at your favorite store or restaurant!

It’s really simple…

But what mama wouldn’t smile at finding that little treasure in her most desperate moment. I know I would have!!

Service Ideas: “Love” Month

IMG_1656.PNG

My oldest came home the other day talking all about Valentines Day but she kept referring to it as  “Love Day”. It made me giggle a little bit to hear her call it that, but It also got me thinking about what we celebrate and why and how and why it couldn’t be more than just one day. What if we set aside time throughout the month, and really the whole year, to love and be loved.

How can you love others well this month? Maybe you need to slow down and show love within the four walls of your home? Maybe you need to walk across the street and show love to the new neighbor that just moved in? Maybe you need to share love to the complete stranger who you pass in the grocery store?

Here are just a few ways we hope to show love around our home:

1. Valentines Mail  –  Before the little ones came along, we would write little notes on hearts, put in a “mailbox” and enjoy opening them up randomly each day leading up to Valentine’s Day. Now with the little ones, they LOVE checking the mailbox and hanging their heart mail throughout the month.  We write things we love about each other, silly jokes, or just a quick hello – whatever we want to say!

2.  Loving Others Sticker Challenge  –  Throughout the month, we are going to play a little game if you will. Each time I see the girls loving and serving others, we’re going to get a heart sticker on our Love Month Heart.  Stickers could come for helping our sister pick up their room, feeding Nola without being asked, helping mommy make cookies for others, being kind and loving with our words and any other “act of love”.  There are lots of things that you can do with the game board once it’s full like give prizes, etc., but we will just be celebrating all the stickers and all the loving! Have fun being creative with it and see how much love you can share!

3. Sharing the Love – Last year the girls and I had such a fun time making and decorating cookies and delivering them to some of our homeless friends. We plan on doing that again this year and making sure they continue to feel extra loved on a day when they are often forgotten.

How will you be celebrating “Love Month” with your little one? It’s so fun to share our ideas and pictures to encourage one another. Be sure to tag us @onmissionmoms so we can all see and celebrate loving and serving others.

Service Idea: Sharing The Love

Valentines Day is coming up this week and who doesn’t love another reason to celebrate, eat chocolate, and serve others too?!? Ivey and I have been chatting a lot the past few weeks about love, Valentine’s Day, and God’s perfect love, which compels us to love others. Now I must admit that this lesson can be a pretty deep thought for my almost four year old, but I believe that any time is a good time to begin to teach her the deeper truths from God’s word, even when she might not fully understand all the implications.  As we were chatting today, out of the blue, she asked if she could make and decorate hearts that we could mail to family  and a couple special friends so that they would know they are loved…. ahhhh, she is listening to us…. sometimes….

Earlier in the week as I was planning and preparing for Valentine’s Day, I was thinking through ways that we could serve and share Jesus’ love this coming week as a family. Immediately baking special cookies for others who may or may not be told they are loved came to my mind. Who doesn’t love a yummy heart shaped cookie, slathered in icing, and doused with a whole ton of pink sugar from a super cute nearly four year old and 18 month old?!

As we bake them and decorate them, we will be praying for our homeless friends who will receive them on Tuesday or Wednesday. We pray that they will experience the love of Christ this Valentine’s Day and be reminded that they are loved by their Heavenly Father and by us! This is a pretty simple, cheap, and easy way to serve with our little ones right beside us too.
